Blues music drew on numerous African American sources. Among these guitar-playing, harmonica-toting innovators were Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Otis Rush, Bo Diddley, Kansas Joe McCoy and Buddy Guy. Thus, while often sorrowful, sadness is not the defining essence of the blues (Murray, 1976, pp. 57 ff.). Between 1926 and 1932, annual sales of phonograph records in the United States plummeted from $126 to $6 million; sales for black performers decreased from $5 million to only $60,000.
